27 Of The Most Enjoyable Holes You Will Every Play

When you tee off at Coachman's, you are greeted by 27 holes of gently sloping hills lined with oaks and willows. You'll find water hazards and roughs that can drive anyone to their knees, yet Coachman's is open enough for beginners to keep up. Our red, white and blue courses ensure that anyone, from a 25 handicap to a scratch golfer is sure to have a great time.

The three 9-hole courses are color coded Red, White and Blue. There are plans to add traps to the 5th hole on the Red nine, a pretty 360-yard par 4 that doglegs to the right around a reflective pond. After clearing the pond, which holds an innumerable number of unrepentant sliced tee shots - you need to make your second shot count to a green surrounded on three sides by a cathedral of mature trees. Be further warned – approach shots bounce right off the hill. Johnson's hope is that adding traps will make the 5th the course's signature hole.

This same pond must also be considered when teeing up on the 4th hole, a birdie hole with an accurate tee shot. As on the 5th, the pond looms menacingly to the right, waiting to swallow errant tee shots. You'll find that the fourth and fifth holes are the most intriguing on the Red nine, which is the shortest at 2,973 yards from the back tees. The Red is also the easiest of the three nines at Coachman's Golf Resort.

Measuring in at 3,211 yards, the White nine is the most challenging of the three. You'll find back-to-back par 5's, followed by par 4's that dogleg left and right on holes 11 through 14. It's a demanding stretch where you'll be faced with a variety of challenging golf shots. Hole No. 11 is a par-5, reachable by long hitters. Interspersed on the heavily wooded 13th and 14th holes are individual ponds that come into play, so accuracy from the tee is vital.

At 354 yards from the back tees, the 13th hole is a tight dogleg left, demanding a precision tee shot to the bend, then a second shot to a green set back in the woods. Beware, for a large tree guards the right side of the green, and a pond sits unseen to the left. The 348-yard 14th hole doglegs around its own pond on the right side and is also framed by mature trees on both sides of the fairway.

The 17th hole is a long, uphill par four. Keep your approach below the hole to avoid the severe slope to the green from back to front. A 180-yard par-3 18th hole then leads you back to your waiting room and a cool drink, some great conversation, and the resort's other amenities.

The most recent addition to Coachman's, the Blue nine, are 3,210 yards from the back tees. North of State Highway 51, you'll gain access only through tunnels that run under the highway, and also run under County Highway W to holes six through nine.

The Blue nine offers some intriguing play, made all the more challenging by a meandering creek that gives players a choice – take a chance and let it rip, or lay up on the 338-yard, par-4 third hole and the 476-yard, par-5 fourth hole. When you're coming up the 5th hole, align your shot with a corn silo built in the late 1800's. It's a historic way to stay in line with the pin!

The Blues offer a strong finish east of Highway W. The first hole after emerging from the tunnel is No.6, a downhill 213-yard par 3 off an elevated tee. Hole No.7 offers the exact opposite: an uphill 501-yard par 5 where you need to stay right at all costs. On hole No. 8, you'll find a 378-yard 90-degree dogleg left waiting for you. This poses another problem altogether - whether to cut the corner, and if so, by how much. No matter what your decision, you'll face a tall row of trees along the left side just waiting to knock your ball down. Hole 9 finishes with a straight drive down a long, 393-yard par 4. Of course, you're going to want to play to the right, avoiding the left at all costs once again.

Despite offering great golf, nobody at Coachman's Golf Resort is resting on laurels. While being on something of a trap-building spree over the past several years, Johnson continues to build more sand traps and enlarge tees on some holes (“sand is part of the game”, he says sheepishly). The family has expansion plans in mind for the complex, including a fourth nine, and possibly a health facility at some point in the future. Johnson has also explored the possibility of creating a condominium development on the site.

While the Johnson family ponders improvements, the staff at Coachman's will continue to offer unlimited golf with delicious American cuisine, and several types of massage therapy sessions. You might say it's the total golf package.
